SINGAPORE — Singapore swimmer Sophie Soon finished fourth out of seven competitors in the women’s 100m breaststroke (SB13) final at the Tokyo Paralympics on Wednesday (1 September).
The 24-year-old clocked 1minute 29.52 seconds at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre to finish behind winner Lucilene da Silva Sousa of Brazil, who set a Paralympic record 1:14.89 en route to gold.
Venezuela’s Belkis Dayanara Mota Echarry earned the silver medal in 1:17.55, while the Ukraine’s Yaryna Matlo took the bronze medal in 1:20.31.
The race completes Soon’s debut appearance at the Paralympics. She had participated in the women’s 100m butterfly (S13) heats last Wednesday, but did not advance to the final.
Soon – who was diagnosed with cone-rod dystrophy as a child, a condition which causes deteriorating vision – holds the national records for the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke (SB13) events.
