Kansas students rush the field after 17-14 win over FCS opponent South Dakota

Kansas students enjoyed their school’s first football win in nearly two years.

Kansas beat South Dakota 17-14 on Friday night in coach Lance Leipold’s first game with the team. It’s the first time Kansas won a game since Oct. 26, 2019 — a span of over 22 months. And that win came after KU fell behind 14-10 in the fourth quarter.

But hey, we’re nothing but positive here. So let’s focus on the fact that Kansas snapped a 13-game losing streak and did It with a fourth-quarter comeback. Jason Bean found Lawrence Arnold for a 16-yard TD with 1:10 left to put Kansas up for good. The touchdown capped an 11-play, 64-yard drive that took nearly four minutes and left South Dakota with not enough time to come back.

It also let the field storming happen. Perhaps that was ironic. And if it was, we can’t blame Kansas students. We also can’t blame them if it was genuine either. Kansas has been the laughingstock of the Big 12 for a long time. Wins don’t happen all that often. They should be enjoyed, even when they happen over FCS opponents. After all, this is the same team that lost to South Dakota State to open the 2015 season. At least the entirety of South Dakota can’t claim bragging rights over the Jayhawks.
