The England and Wales Cricket Borard (ECB) has cancelled the fifth and final Test between India and England at Old Trafford, Manchester just hours before the scheduled start of play on Friday.
“Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LVInsurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be canceled,” said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in a statement.
“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are unable to field a team and will instead regrettably forfeit the match.
“We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many. Further information will be shared in due course,” the statement further read.
Earlier, there has been a lot of speculation over the fate of Test since yesterday after India’s assistant physio Yogesh Parmar tested positive of Covid-19. The Indian cricket team has been in isolation since then. However, after fresh set of tests, all players of the Indian cricket team have tested negative for Covid-19 on Thursday evening.
It is also learnt that more than one India player had expressed concerns about taking the field in talks between the BCCI and the team management over the last two days.
India lead the five-match series 2-1 after a 157-run win in the fourth Test at the Oval in London
The capacity of Old Trafford is approximately 21,500, and fans, who bought the tickets, would be disappointed. They will be reimbursed as per the ECB’s cancellations policy, but it’s a big hole in Lancashire’s finances.
According to media reports, UK TV channel Sky Sports News has been reporting that the final scoreline of the five-match series will be determined by match referee Chris Broad.
