As if anyone needed further confirmation, every 2000s trend is pretty much back. Today’s garment in the spotlight: True Religion, better known as the aughts’ favorite denim brand, who linked up with Supreme for a new collection due out this month.
While much of the Y2K fashion nostalgia has centered on replication rather than homage, Supreme x True Religion mixes and matches silhouettes and details in a way that feels like an ode to the Jim Jones era of hip-hop fashion. There’s a baggy-fied pair of classic Supreme cargo pants that’ve been given the telltale True Religion treatment: chunky white stitching, distressed denim whiskering, and signature horseshoe pocket embroidery. Those pants, along with a matching trucker jacket (that can be worn together, 2 Chainz style), come in four different colorways, including camo and baby pink. Supreme even swapped out its usual 5-panel hat for a more era-appropriate 6-panel, complete with rhinestones.
Fans first suspected a possible collab when Tyshawn Jones—a Supreme-sponsored skateboarder—wore a purple zip-up hoodie featuring both the Supreme logo and True Religion’s guitar-wielding Buddha graphic to an event earlier this month. The official announcement arrives on the heels of True Religion’s 15-month restructuring after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2020. Michael Buckley, who was president of True Religion from 2006 to 2010 before returning to the brand in 2019, saw a new opportunity to pivot to collaborations, especially ones that might appeal to Gen Z, telling Forbes in May: “Like everyone in the digital world, we’re promotional.”
At the rate we’ve been going, it really was only a matter of time before a brand that Fergie name-checked in the prophetic 2005 Black Eyed Peas hit “My Humps” got a Supreme collab. One top comment on the brand’s Instagram announcement post reads: “This is the weirdest timeline we’re living in.”
