Tragedy as man, 53, dies on his second day in Brisbane hotel quarantine in apparent suicide – with police finding a note at the scene

Police fear a man may have committed suicide while in hotel quarantine in Brisbane after his body was discovered next to a note on Monday evening.
Emergency services workers found the 53 year old man unresponsive in his bathroom at the Novotel Brisbane Airport around 5pm on Monday.
It’s understood the man from Brisbane’s north was found with self-inflicted injuries with a suicide note left at the scene, just two days after going into quarantine.
‘Unfortunately, I can confirm tragically overnight a male person in his 50s was found passed away in one of our quarantine hotels,’ said Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy.
‘I’m not able to go into any more detail at the moment but what I will say is that the matter is under investigation by police, and it will be referred to the coroner following that investigation and we’re engaging with the coroner at the moment.
‘I just would like to acknowledge the response of the police and our health staff and other agencies in hotel staff that are working at the hotels, their response to that tragic matter.’
The tragedy comes as the Queensland recorded six new Covid cases overnight, including two in hotel quarantine and one from a traveller just released from quarantine.
A fourth case was a truck driver who was active in the community for eight days while infected before developing flu-like symptoms and getting tested.
Investigations are still underway to retrace his steps to identify exposure sites.
The fifth and six cases are an aviation industry worker and his wife who sparked exposure site warnings at four locations around Brisbane.
Masks must now be worn indoors again in Brisbane and Moreton Bay area in response to the latest outbreak.
Truck drivers in Queensland will also need to have their first vaccination dose by October 15 and be double jabbed by November 15 to continue to work in the state.
