A 24-year-old finance analyst with no previous business experience has turned over $100,000 in eight months selling stainless steel dermaplaning tools to use at home.
Maggie Cripps, from Melbourne, launched her small business Smoothie Stick on February 1, 2021 after noticing a gap in the market for high-quality reusable dermaplaning blades.
Dermaplaning is a type of facial treatment that helps exfoliate and remove micro facial hairs on the skin using a small but safe medical-grade blade.
‘I had been dermaplaning for years and was sick of the awful quality of the single-use blades,’ Maggie told FEMAIL.
‘In lockdown last year I had a lot of free time and I have always wanted to start my own brand, so I thought I’d give it a go’.

Compared to alternatives products on the market, Maggie claims Smoothie Stick’s unique stainless steel design provides a sharper, better finish that is safe to use
A year prior to launching the business, Maggie researched the product by watching YouTube videos and designed her own logo and packing using Canva.
Compared to other products on the market, Maggie claims Smoothie Stick’s unique stainless steel design provides a sharper, better finish that is safe to use.
‘There was a lot of trial and error to make the product perfect, but I knew I wanted the tool to be stainless steel,’ she said.
The product was designed in Australia but manufactured overseas, and due to Covid-19 this presented packaging delays.
Maggie said the $30 dermaplaning blades feature an innovative design with a high-quality non-irritating blade, stainless steel body and reusable silicone handle.
The product can be used at least four times, whereas alternatives made from plastic can only be used once.
Dermaplaning offers a range of benefits including the removal of dead skin cells and small microfibre hairs that can often trap unwanted dirt inside pores.
The safe treatment will also allow the skin to absorb skincare products more efficiently, resulting in a brighter looking complexion.
Unlike shaving, the fine hairs won’t grow back thicker or darker.
Last month the brand turned over $30,000 and reached a six-figure milestone, leaving Maggie completely surprised.

Maggie said her financial success was the result of ‘a lot of hard work’, especially at night after she had finished her day job.
While Maggie has now quit her full-time job, she said she studies hard and follows a strict schedule to grow the business.
She chose to study a masters in marketing specifically for the business.
The brand has also gained a strong following of more than 15,000 people on TikTok, with one demonstrative video receiving more than 6.2million views.
The business also sold out of stock twice and the most popular product bundle is the Smoothie Stick starter pack, which includes two Smoothie Sticks, two reusable bamboo pads, one silicone reusable handle and one instruction pack.
