The Sensex had recovered from an early morning low of 55,135, and was up nearly 300 points at 55,650-odd level. The NSE Nifty was seen holding the 16,550 level.
Among the Sensex 30 shares, Reliance surged 3 per cent. Bajaj Finserv, TCS, Infosys, Sun Pharma, Nestle India and HCL Technologies were the other major gainers.
On the flip side, Hindustan Unilever and PowerGrid Corporation slipped nearly 2 per cent each. HDFC, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank were the other notable losers.
Among stocks, Religare Enterprises soared over 10 per cent. The company said it has resolved many legacy issues left over by its erstwhile promoters, including settlement with SEBI and becoming debt free.
